Sustainability Made Simple: Let’s Talk About What It Really Means

Hallo guys! Monday today, let’s have a great start to the week, even though the planets are moving absolutely crazy right now...
So, I decided to write about something general but always interesting. A topic we talk and talk about, and honestly, it never gets old.
And of course, what else could it be except sustainability?
Yeees, but don’t worry - we’re not going into boring textbook talk today. Let’s keep it super simple and just talk about what it really means, especially in fashion.
What Is Sustainability?
So, who knows what sustainability actually is?
Ah sorry, I was talking again.
In simple words, sustainability means being able to keep something going without destroying the resources around us. It’s about balance ,using what we need today without taking away from the people who come after us.
It’s built on three main things:
1. Environmental – protecting our planet and its resources
2. Social – treating people and communities with fairness and respect
3. Economic – building systems that can last long-term and support everyone
Or as people like to say — Planet. People. Profit.
Easy, right?
Let’s Talk Fashion
Now, let’s move to the fun part - fashion.
We love it, we live it, we express ourselves through it… but it’s also one of the most polluting industries in the world.
The fashion industry uses a massive amount of water and energy, and sadly, many garments are still made by underpaid workers ,mostly women and girls in unfair conditions. But here’s the good part: fashion is also powerful. It shows who we are and who we want to become.
As professor Anupama Pasricha says, “Fashion is a window to our culture, beliefs, and attitudes.”
And that means we can use it to create change and not just trends.
The Truth About Fast Fashion
Let’s be honest, fast fashion made clothes cheap and everywhere. But the price we don’t see is huge.
- The fashion industry makes up 20% of global wastewater and 8% of all greenhouse gas emissions - more than all international flights and shipping combined.
- Around 60% of fabrics used today are made from plastic (like polyester or nylon), which release microplasticsinto the ocean every time we wash them.
- And 85% of clothes end up in landfills or are burned instead of being reused or recycled.
And that’s not even counting the human side - over 80% of garment workers are women, most earning way below a living wage.
It’s a lot to take in, but knowing this is already a big step forward.
So What Can We Do?
We can’t change the whole industry overnight, but we can change how we act inside it.
Small steps matter, always.
Here’s where we can start:
- Buy less, but better quality.
- Repair, reuse, and repurpose clothes instead of throwing them away.
- Support brands that are actually transparent, not just doing “greenwashing.”
- Ask questions , where was this made? who made it? what’s it made of?
- Educate yourself and others. Change always starts with awareness.
To Wrap It Up…
Here at Sancy, we’re not trying to sound perfect , we’re just trying our best.
Our mission, both with Sancy and this blog, is to understand sustainability better and to keep improving the way we do things.
We already produce slowly in the EU and use ECONYL®, a regenerated fabric made from ocean and landfill waste , but we know there’s always more to learn and new ways to do better.
This blog is part of that journey, to stay curious, ask questions, and find better solutions together.
Because sustainability isn’t a final goal… it’s a path we walk step by step.
With love,
Angela
